A variety of factors—changing economic conditions, concern for historic preservation, emphasis on fully utilizing conveniently located structures, space shortages, and increasing cost of materials and products used in the construction of new buildings—has resulted in a need to evaluate and more fully utilize the existing building inventory. To this end, this Standard (an update of ASCE 11-90) provides the design community with guidelines for assessing the structural conditions of existing buildings constructed of combinations of material, including concrete, masonry, metals, and wood. This volume contains of an overview of preliminary and detailed assessment procedures, of materials properties and test methods, and of evaluation procedures for various physical conditions of the structure. This Standard will provide a much-needed resource standard for building condition assessment for selected materials and for other areas related to the structural performance of buildings. Professional engineers, building owners, and regulatory officials will find this Standard invaluable.

This is the first book to completely cover diatomaceous earth (DE) filtration as applied to the treatment of drinking water. Best suited to the treatment of low-turbidity sources of water supply, DE filtration has shown a superior capability for the removal of pathogenic cysts such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, as well as other U.S. EPA–recognized pathogens. This book provides engineering professionals with all the information needed for evaluating DE filtration as an alternative method of treatment that is both cost effective and small in installed size. This comprehensive book serves both as a reference and as a practical design manual providing both background performance data and tips for application to conventional and unusual treatment situations. Various chapters guide the engineer through complete design procedures from preliminary comparisons with alternative methods of treatment, through consideration of the different types of DE filters and ancillary equipment options available to pilot testing, to development of design criteria and final design of treatment facilities. Topics include equipment and materials of construction as related to wear and safety, site development, plant start-up and operation, troubleshooting operating problems, and routine maintenance.

Proceedings of sessions of Geo-Denver 2000, held in Denver, Colorado, August 5-8, 2000. Sponsored by the Geo-Institute of ASCE. This Geotechnical Special Publications contains 12 papers that describe the latest applications of geotechnical engineering principles to the solution of environmental problems. The diversity of the papers in this GSP reflects the multidisciplinary nature of geoenvironmental engineering. A section on landfills and recycled materials deals with landfill settlements, including municipal landfills as well as landfills utilizing recycled waste paper sludge, and the use of recycled materials in road constructions and as a concrete aggregate. A section on barrier systems examines contaminant transport through waste contaminant barriers. A third section on processes and properties describes processes used in waste remediation projects, properties of a modified bentonite, and biological clogging.
